धर्मार्थाङ्गकामभ्यो नम:।

Transliteration

Dharmārthāṅga-kāmebhyo namaḥ

Literal Translation

  • Dharma: Righteousness, ethics, and social duty.

  • Artha: Prosperity, wealth, and worldly success.

  • Kama: Desire, love, and sensory pleasure.

  • Namaḥ: Salutation or “I bow to.”

Translation: “Salutation to Dharma, Artha, and Kama.”

Modern Insight

In a world that often separates spirituality (Dharma), career (Artha), and relationships (Kama), this verse suggests they are interconnected. Vatsyayana begins by bowing to all three because he believes a successful life requires a balance of all three. Modern psychology echoes this in the “Work-Life Balance” or “Holistic Wellness” movements, where professional achievement and personal pleasure are seen as equally necessary components of a meaningful life.

Takeaway

The primary takeaway is Integration. By bowing to Dharma and Artha before Kama, the author signals that physical pleasure is most fulfilling when it is built on a foundation of ethical living and material stability. It serves as a reminder that we shouldn’t feel guilty about seeking pleasure, provided it does not harm our duties or our financial security.
